IELTS Writing Task 1 GT - Sample 124
You recently stayed in a hotel in a large city. The weather was very unusual for the time of year and the heating / cooling system in the hotel was quite inadequate. Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter:
- give details of what went wrong
- explain what you had to do to overcome the problem at the time
- say what action you would like the manager to take
You should write at least 150 words.
You do NOT need to write your own address.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to complain about my stay in your hotel on July 22nd. I am a regular visitor to Dubai and have always enjoyed the service your hotel provides during my stays. However, the last experience was quite unpleasant.
As you are well aware, the ambient temperature in Dubai hardly goes below 10 degrees of Celsius in winters; thus most hotels’ air conditioning (AC) systems, including yours, are only equipped with cooling fan coil units. Surprisingly, during my stay, the temperature hit zero degrees and the rooms needed to be heated. Unfortunately, the AC system did not have such capability, which really troubled me and all other guests. I had reserved a smoking room which required fresh air to be circulated through the AC. While I needed fresh air, the supply air was cool and I was literary freezing, which was extremely irritating.
Because I could not tolerate stuffy air, I was to keep the AC on and wear all my warm clothes even during sleep. Imagine how I felt when I had to sleep in such an outfit as I usually do in the tents of mountain camps. The only difference is that I paid 300$ per night for a 5-star hotel. To cap it all, I caught a severe cold after I took a hot shower and came to the cold room.
I am sure you understand what I went through, and that is why I request a complete refund for the price of my reservation. As an air conditioning expert, I recommend that you add an electric heating coil to your AC devices for such rare circumstances.
I would appreciate your prompt response at your earliest convenience.
Sincerely yours,
Vahid Rouhani
